There I was sitting on the hard wood floor of our family’s living room floor, mouth and eyes wide open, shocked at what just had happened. It was Sunday afternoon, February 28, 2010 and I was beside myself as Team USA just scored the goal that could potentially change the entire game. You see, Team USA and Team Canada were competing at the final Vancouver Olympic event and Team Canada absolutely needed to win this game! Not only would it have meant that Canada beat the world record for most gold medals won at any winter Olympics; but, a loss would have meant that we would have lost to the Americans. Hockey between Canadians and Americans has always been a big event; and so we needed to win this game to keep our pride!
Forty-eight seconds in the third period of regulation time, the U.S. scored a goal on our goaltender, David Luongo, to tie the game, leaving me in a state of disbelief. For the remaining forty-eight seconds of the period, Canada did a great job at playing defence and superbly protected their net from another goal. Crosby finally scored the winning goal 7 minutes and 40 seconds in overtime which got our entire nation on our feet screaming and cheering as Canada not only won the gold medal game versus the United States but also led us to breaking a world record for winning the most gold medals at an Olympic Games event.
"It doesn't even feel real. It feels like a dream, our team worked really hard in regulation time and they got that one by us in the end. But we came out in overtime and this is just an unbelievable feeling." said Crosby as Canada clinched a record eighth Olympic men's hockey gold.
Can a star athlete get anymore humble than that? GO CANADA GO!!!!!
